BAFFLED GAZZA’S BIZZARE QUESTION

Daily Star

15th June 2008 By Michael Booker

TROUBLED Paul Gascoigne asked a fan: “Am I famous?” after he was approached for an autograph.

The former England midfield ace, 41, is currently being treated for addiction problems and depression at the world famous Priory rehab clinic in South-West London.

In the weeks before his admission, paid for by pals and well-wishers in the football world, Gazza’s life had spiralled out of control.

And things had got so bad that just days before entering the clinic he had forgotten about his trail-blazing days as a superstar footballer with teams including Newcastle United, Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio.

In the meeting, on a street in the centre of Birmingham, he also admitted he’d like to become a cage fighter and gave his phone number as 999.

But signs of the old big-hearted Gazza were still evident when he told the fan – cage fighter Dave Dillon, from Chorley, Lancs – that he would try and help out at the launch of Dave’s gym.

A source told the Daily Star Sunday: “Gazza didn’t look too good but he happily chatted with Dave when they met on the street.

“Dave mentioned he was opening a gym and Gazza said he would love to help him out.

“He asked for Gazza’s number and things started to go a bit strange. Gazza said his number was 999 and then all of a sudden had to ask Dave if he was actually famous.

“It was a bit weird. He then said he would be interested in cage fighting and then wandered off.

“The most striking thing was that he didn’t know he was famous.”

Not long after the chance meeting, Gazza was sectioned under the Mental Health Act following a series of bizarre incidents while boozed up.

Meanwhile, family sources say the star is “slowly but surely” getting on the road to recovery thanks to his treatment at the Priory.

The source said: “He’s making tentative steps but at least they are in the right direction.

“Things are certainly looking more positive now than they have done for a long time.”

Gazza’s recovery has been boosted thanks to regular visits from ex-wife Sheryl and his best pal Jimmy “Five Bellies” Gardner, both 42.
